Retirement
By Meril Schrock
I remember when I was much younger, I dreamed of retiring and being able to travel and take some time to enjoy life. Well, reality has a way of smacking you in the face. My experience with it so far has not been the highlight of my life. Not complaining, though I can see how it might look that way. Just stating some facts. I had the misfortune over 5 years ago of ending up in the hospital, diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. (CHF) Had a heart attack while in ICU and got the pacemaker installed. I jokingly call it my transistor ignition. Gotta keep a sense of humor or you might as well give up. Thankfully I was working at a place that had decent health insurance, so the bulk of this was covered. The total was at 150,000. dollars. Ouch! Was told to take 6 months off of work to recover. Well, knew that wasn't going to work. Some how the insurance plan for supplemental income while off for something like this had not been taken care of as I had been told. Big problem. Lose house and everything else, cool. After 2 months and mounting bills, I talked Dr into giving me a conditional release to go back to work. From there it was a constant struggle. Then that company went out of business. Auto Dealership. Fast forward to 2008. Sold house to keep from losing it and paid some bills and bought a small mobile home in a retirement park. Without help from family, I would not have made it until I turned 62 and was able to file for Social Security. While not a lot of money, at least I could pay my basic bills, but not much left over. But I am thankful for at least that. I had worked for International Harvester back in Ft Wayne IN and had a vested pension from them. They had closed the plant there, and my happy retirement and travel plan went up in smoke. Expecting some small checks to start in October and those will help. Am very thankful that I had that in the wings and the company is still in business and doing well. So my retirement has so far been about just surviving. Not exactly what I dreamed of. But I've always tried to take the lemon and make lemonade. Just seems like too many lemons at once, sometimes. But, I am not giving up and my solution is trying to find an online business I can do with my computer and phone. Have learned this can be like walking through a mine field. But, if you never swing the bat, you will never hit the ball. So I kept plugging away. Recently found something that has me very optimistic about future. So have my fingers crossed and jumped on it. One never knows what life has in store for you. All the best laid plans can go south. Think it's all about hanging in there, keeping a positive attitude and never giving up. Oh, I left a lot of "Lemons" out of this. 911 calls, trips to hospital, heck just talking about that depresses me, so it's water under the bridge. I am very thankful for what I do have. A place to live, 3 healthy children and 4 healthy grandsons. The kind of things you cannot buy are the most precious. Best wishes to all, Meril Schrock |

Thanks for comment. Can't give up or it's all over. Still have things I would like to do and places I would like to see. Thankfully, I live in a place that has lots of things to see and do that are close by. Arizona never ceases to amaze me every time I go on a day trip. That helps keep me going.
I rated this information a ***** because of your positive attitude, Meril. Thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
Very nice, thank you... challenging times, for sure. I have 3 grown kids with 3 grandsons and one grandbaby on the way. I am thankful, too! :)
